Stain Removal Guide

The chart on this page identifies stain removal procedures for some of the most common household spills.

WARNING: This guide has been carefully developed for use on carpets manufactured with synthetic carpet fibres and may not be appropriate for use on other carpet fibres, particularly wool. USE ONLY THE PROCEDURES SPECIFIED IN THIS GUIDE.

Do not use these procedures subsequent to or in any combination with other cleaning procedures. THE USE OF NON-APPROVED CLEANING AGENTS OR PROCEDURES MAY DAMAGE YOUR CARPET AND INVALIDATE YOUR MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY.

General Instructions:

Time and patience are important keys to stain removal. If a spill occurs, immediately try to remove it by blotting with a slightly damp sponge or dry paper towel, followed by repetitive cold water sprays and blotting with a paper towel. If this fails to remove the stain, carefully read the following procedures and follow them thoroughly. Where two procedures are listed (Example A,M), start with the first (A), followed only if needed by the second (M). Repeat as long as there is improvement.

PROCEDURES:

A - Apply dry-cleaning fluid (see “Cleaning Solutions” below) with a dry white towel/cloth. Blot, do not rub. Repeat dry-cleaning fluid with weighted pad of towels.

B - Scrape or blot excess spill. Using a damp white cotton towel, apply Roto-Static Carpet Stain Remover or detergent (see "Cleaning Solutions" below) to the spill. Blot, or agitate gently, do not rub. Apply water with a damp towel. Blot and finish with a weighted pad of towels.

D - Scrape or blot excess spill. Using a damp white towel, apply Roto-Static Carpet Stain Remover or detergent (see "Cleaning Solutions" below) to the spill. Blot or agitate gently, do not rub. Using a damp towel, apply ammonia (see "Cleaning Solutions" below) to the spill. Blot, do not rub. Apply water with a damp towel. Blot and finish with a weighted pad of towels. Once stain has been removed, apply undiluted white vinegar. Blot.

G - Scrape or blot excess spill. Freeze with ice cubes. Shatter with a blunt object such as the back of a spoon. Vacuum residue away before it softens.

L - Apply nail polish remover (acetone, non-oily) to the spill with a white cotton towel. Do not soak the carpet. Pick up softened material. Using a clean white paper towel, push toward the centre of the stain avoiding spreading the spot. Repeat, softening and carefully removing a layer of the material each time.

M - Apply Roto-Static Carpet Stain Remover or detergent (see "Cleaning Solutions" below) with a damp white towel. Let stand for 3 to 5 minutes. Blot or agitate gently, do not rub. If the stain is removed finish with a water rinse and blot dry, using some pressure. If the stain is not completely removed, apply hydrogen peroxide solution (see "Cleaning Solutions" below), let stand for 2 to 3 hours beneath a weighted sheet of plastic wrap. Repeat the application of hydrogen peroxide and let dry under the plastic sheet until removal is complete. Apply water with a damp towel. Once stain is removed apply undiluted white vinegar and blot.

O - Gently scrape off excess wax with a blunt edge. Cover with a white cotton towel or heavy brown wrapping paper. Apply a warm, not hot, iron until wax is absorbed. Continuously move to a dry spot on the towel or brown paper. Do not touch the iron directly to the carpet or the wax to avoid damaging the carpet fibre. Repeat, going to a clean spot on the towel or paper as needed, until all the wax is absorbed.

P - Vacuum as much soil/dirt as possible. Loosen remaining material by tapping, not scrubbing, with a hand brush, tooth brush or blunt edge. Re-vacuum. Follow with Procedure "B".

Q - Scrape off excess material, being careful not to spread. Lightly rub with a fresh slice of white bread. Complete removal with Procedure "A".
